Permanent Installation
Looking north, the prism skylight is in the top of the photo. In the afternoon, the engines are rainbow painted.
Moving cross of spectrum light glides through equipment bay.
A skylight projects a cross of ever-changing solar spectrum color into the new fire station.
This living rainbow light painting gradually sweeps across the floor, walls, fire trucks, fire fighters and visitors, as the Earth turns and the seasons change. A fire fighter's duty is to always be prepared to meet danger at any moment. And to always keep themselves and their equipment in top shape to do so. So life in a fire station can vacillate between emotional tension and boredom. The purpose of this site specific Solar Spectrum Environmental Art installation is to bring the sublime beauty of the rainbow, Nature's most beautiful light, into this tense and sometimes boring work space. The radiant, changing, soothing colors act as a healing balm for fire fighters and visitors. Always a fresh offering.
